When I read through the questionnaire from this Mama, she told me she really didn’t know what to expect as they had never had family pictures taken before. I’m not going to lie- my eyes lit up and I did a happy dance! Clients like this are my jam! I am a Denver lifestyle family photographer. I am NOT a Denver posed family photographer. If you are looking for the stiff posed everyone look at the camera and smile photos, I am not your gal. Getting a family that has zero expectations and that will embrace my process is like hitting the jackpot in the world of photography clients.
My lifestyle family photography sessions are really focused on taking the time to slow down. We spend so much time racing from point a to b and back again, appreciating the subtleties in life are often overlooked. We will purposefully take the time to slow down, appreciate those long embraces, the art of discovery and the moments of affection. These sessions are real, raw and focus on capturing the moments versus the poses.
While I REALLY try to control every single aspect when it comes to planning a lifestyle family photography session, sometimes, it just doesn’t go as planned. With this session, we had selected the perfect location, the weather was supposed to be great (great for fall in Colorado), every was styled perfectly. The night before the session, I went to do a walkthrough at the location only to discover that the access bridge was closed! UGHHH SERIOUSLY?!?!?! So we had to come up with another location. We ended up shooting in a no frills location that I had used for a quick model session a few days before. It didn’t have the beautiful lake in the background or the epic Colorado mountains for sunset, but you know what……sometimes the background is insignificant. The connection between this family was so over powering, and truly the focus of the session.
Yes it really did. RAIN! But this family did not let it ruin our time together. They embraced the elements and we kept on going. It was amazing. What I loved most about this session is that this family didn’t wait for me to tell them what to do, they just played and loved on their babies. And everything else just fell into place.
This is by far the toughest part of being a Denver lifestyle family photographer. When the kiddos don’t do exactly what Mama wants or they start to get cranky. It is SO important that as a parent you do NOT make a big deal of this- we keep going. 90% of the time a little change of scenery is all it takes. If that is not the case then embrace it! This storytelling session is all about capturing your tribe as they are in THIS moment. Whatever that moment may be. All of this beautiful chaotic imperfection is YOUR LIFE, YOUR STORY. Be in the moment, let go and embrace it.
Sometimes it is hard to know if the client was happy when you part ways. In your mind the session was epic and all things amazing, only to find out you didn’t capture x, y, and z that the client wanted. It is rare that this happens but I am not going to lie and say that it hasn’t. I knew that this one was a success when the kiddos didn’t want to leave and wanted to keep playing. I love it! Mom and Dad both said over and over how fun our time together was and that made my heart so dang happy!
Every time I deliver a gallery, I wait and wait and WAIT for word from my families that they loved their images as much as I did. I pour my heart and soul into hand painting each and every image after carefully selecting only the best images that I feel tell their story in a way that is real. So please – don’t leave me hanging shoot me a quick note and let me know you at least got the gallery :). I was so moved when this Mama replied to me after receiving her images. This is what she said – “Thank you so much! I literally had tears in my eyes when I looked through these! The pictures are gorgeous and you captured our girls personalities so beautifully. I am so happy we did this and can’t thank you enough.” THIS is why I am a lifestyle family photographer!
