As a Denver family photographer, some of my favorite sessions take place during these colder months, when the golden winter light and cozy layers come together to tell beautiful, heartfelt stories.
Why Winter Is the Perfect Time for Family Photos
Many families wait until spring or fall for their annual pictures, but winter offers a unique charm all its own. Imagine your family snuggled up under blankets, walking through a dusting of fresh snow, or laughing together in front of a frosted pine forest — it’s cinematic, intimate, and real. Even if there is no snow, Colorado winter portraits are beautiful. There is the golden tone to the grasses that blends so beautifully with the infamous flatirons and then that light…….. that dreamy winter glowy light.
Even on cloudy days, the soft, diffused Denver light makes everyone’s skin tones glow beautifully. Plus, winter sessions are typically less crowded, meaning we have more space to explore and create in peace.
What to Wear for a Denver Winter Family Session
Outfits can make or break a winter photo session, but don’t worry—it’s easier than you think to stay stylish and warm. I recommend:
- Layers in neutral tones: Think warm sweaters, soft scarves, and textured coats that add dimension.
- Complementary color palettes: Deep greens, creams, rusts, and soft grays photograph beautifully against winter landscapes.
- Accessorize smartly: Hats, mittens, and blankets aren’t just cozy — they add storytelling and movement to your photos. Feel free to go for a cozy vibe!
- Colorado winter portraits can also fall on a day that is quite warm, (if you have been here a minute, you know how crazy the weather is here) if that is the case, neutral tones with texture is the way to go!
