THIS. I can’t reiterate this enough people! I am a Colorado photographer and I shoot feelings. What does that mean you ask? Read on my friends, and I am going to tell you.
Gone are the days of stiff, awkward posing.
Look at this image and I want you to think about what kind of feeling it envokes in you. Does it make you happy, sad, hopeful? There is no right answer, you see it is all about capturing a feeling. To me, this image shows joy, hope and love. The Joy of childhood, hope for the future and the love of two sisters.
The moments I want to remember……
As a Colorado photographer and a parent, I spend a lot of time thinking about things like this……what I would want to remember when I look at pictures of my own family. When I first started out in photography, I was big on being technically correct – rule of thirds, not cutting off body parts etc. I wanted every image I took to be just perfect, technically that is. BUT, there was always something missing to me, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. You know when its on the tip of your tongue but you just cant place it?? That is what I was experiencing with my images.
AND THEN IT HIT ME.
You guys, it hit me like a TON OF BRICKS! I was missing that connection, that feeling, in a portrait that truly captures my client at THAT moment. Shots like the one above are so much more important to me to capture then the everyone smile and look at the camera images. I want to capture memories & moments. I want to tell a story. A story of feelings.
The lightbulb went off!
Once I realized this, my photography became so much more to me then just snapping pictures of families for an hour. It became personal. More about wanting to get to know my clients and what is was about each member of the family that made them unique. I stopped stressing about the technical aspects of a photo (OMG I know! I totally threw the rules out the window!) and really focused more on what kind of feeling was being portrayed in the image.
My defining moment.
You could say that I was reenergized, my fire was re-lit and my focus changed. Photography truly is feeling. It is not awkward posing and fake smiles, it is about joy, love and family. These are the things I want my clients to remember when they look back at their images. This is the legacy I want them to leave. My name is Erin, I am a Colorado photographer who tells a story. YOUR STORY. I encourage you to hop over to my website and check out some of the amazing families who have chosen me to tell their story.
I want to tell YOUR story.
You hear me say this often but feel like it cannot be said enough. I am so blessed and grateful to be able to call this a job.
